The Environs est le principal ouvrage de Daniel Lysons (1762-1834), qui a dessiné lui-même la plupart des illustrations. « The whole forms a work of permenant value ; the arrangement is clear and the style interesting ; while the copious extracts from the parochial registers, though occasionally inaccurate, are useful to the biographer and genealogist ». (Oxford DNB).

Archibald Philip Primrose (1847 – 1929), 5ème comte de Rosebery, connu également à partir de 1851 sous le titre de courtoisie de Lord Dalmeny, fut Premier ministre de la reine Victoria de 1894 à 1895.
